Artistic Residency Program

In an effort to provide support to emerging local artists, Southern California Ballet offers an artistic residency program.

About

The program provides studio space to professional dancers and choreographers wishing to develop new work and further their creativity whilst sharing their knowledge and experience with our students and community.

At the end of the residency, the artists will hold a performance or showcase of their work, to be followed by a Q&A.

What We’re Looking For

Southern California Ballet welcomes experimental projects, collaborations, and ideas. In particular, classical, neo-classical, and contemporary ballet-based choreography with a strong emphasis on the narrative aspect of dance is encouraged.

Sessions

Suggested length: 1-4 weeks
Preferred times of year: May-June, September-October*

*Even if applying outside of these months, please submit your application at least four weeks in advance of your proposed start date.

During residency, successful applicants receive:

  • Free use of Southern California Ballet studio space at pre-agreed times of the day (times at the discretion of the SCB artistic team—academy always takes priority) for pre-agreed amount of time to develop choreographic work

  • Performance or presentation opportunity at end of residency

  • Promotion on Southern California Ballet social media and within our community

  • Paid opportunities to work with dancers of the SCB company level to share and refine the work being developed

“The showing at the end of our residency was invaluable. The evening was presented in a manner that was professional, organized, and intimate - which encouraged the diverse community in attendance to openly share their impressions and interpretations.

It was truly illuminating to be able to exchange ideas through discussions at an early stage in a process.
