Dress Code at SCB
About Uniform & Presentation
Uniform and presentation are of utmost importance to dancers. SCB requires a uniform in order to keep classes focused on learning dance, rather than on fashion or peer to peer comparison. A uniform starts dancers off on the same foot, facilitating learning by placing the focus of class on dance itself.
The uniform also enables teachers to assess students’ form and therefore work with them more efficiently.
Presentation in class is our starting point as dancers. It is the first thing seen when we walk into the studio or onto the stage. It is said that a messy uniform makes messy dancers, and it is true that dance is an external representation of ourselves much in the same way as our appearance; therefore, both go hand in hand.

Does my dancer need a bag or anything else?
Yes, dancers should have a bag for their shoes and water bottle to prevent items from getting lost. All items should be labeled with the dancer’s name; any found items will be placed in SCB’s lost & found. Dancers with a cell phone in their bag should turn it off or have it on silent mode unless used for medical reasons.
Leotard and Tights
A ballet leotard should fit like a bathing suit, it should be comfortable, but when your dancer moves around it should stay in place. Ballet tights are meant to be snug and should sit on the dancer’s natural waist. We highly recommend going to a dance store where they can help you with the fit for your leotard and first pair of tights.
Is it just a leotard and tights?
Tights are dancers’ undergarments and it is beneficial for all dancers to become familiar with this as early as possible. Thinking of a leotard as a bathing suit can help with this transition. Dancers only need to wear a leotard and tights. Underwear under a leotard and tights can bunch up and cause discomfort and may embarrass young dancers when showing.
Slippers
Ballet slippers are made of either canvas or leather. It is very important that your dancers feet are comfortable and that they are in the proper shoes. Please do not purchase satin ballet slippers or socks, as they are very slippery and your dancer may injure themselves. We highly recommend going to a dance store where they can assess the fit for your first pair of shoes.
What should dancers wear if they are cold?
Dancers who tend to get cold should wear a ballet wrap, available at a local dance store or online.
How should dancers arrive at the studio?
Dancers should always arrive at the studio with some kind of cover, such as a skirt, large sweatshirt, or shorts.
Dancers should not wear their shoes outside on the ground, if dancers feel more comfortable wearing their ballet slippers before they arrive, they should have some sort of sliding shoes (crocs/sandals) where they can wear their slippers and still walk safely.
